State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam said India must decide what kind of relationship it wants with Bangladesh.
She made the remarks while responding to questions about former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s public comments in Delhi.
Islam said she believed the governments and people of both countries wanted stronger relations.
She said the two countries had multiple issues that required discussion and dialogue.
Islam alleged that members and leaders of the Awami League were carrying out conspiratorial activities from Indian territory.
She said allowing such activity would create concern among people in Bangladesh.
The minister said Bangladesh wanted talks to continue on energy cooperation, water sharing and border management.
She said bilateral relations could not remain confined to one issue.
Islam said narratives linking Bangladesh to militancy had previously been used in Awami League politics, an assertion not independently established in this evidence set.
She said Bangladesh sought relations based on equality, mutual respect and national interests.
On a possible visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to a BRICS summit in New Delhi, Islam said a final decision would depend on his schedule.
