Dr Shafiqur Rahman, Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami and leader of the opposition in parliament, announced a long march from Dhaka to Chattogram on 5 September to press for the rights of the people.
The announcement came on Thursday (6 August) at Muktangan in Dhaka during a sit-in by an 11-party alliance against rising prices of daily necessities, phantom electricity bills and deteriorating law and order.
Shafiqur Rahman said that if the march is blocked it will be taken to its destination with double strength, and he demanded the withdrawal of recent price increases on essential goods.
The 11-party alliance also scheduled long marches from Dhaka to Rangpur on 19 September, Dhaka to Khulna on 10 October and Dhaka to Sylhet on 24 October.
Nahid Islam, convener of the NCP, alleged that the government is betraying the people at every step and should not dream of staying in power if it fails to guarantee basic rights such as gas and electricity.
Islam also accused Chhatra Dal of again plotting to occupy halls of residence in the form of Chhatra League.
He further alleged that the BNP has been looting after coming to power through elections and that a syndicate is creating shortages of fuel oil and gas to push up prices of essentials and electricity.
