Jamaat-e-Islami chief and opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman called for an accurate, comprehensive register of living and fallen Liberation War fighters at a book-launch event in Dhaka on Tuesday.
He said that, 55 years after independence, a full list had still not been compiled, and argued that preparing one was the government's responsibility.
Rahman said he had heard that 656 families of fallen Liberation War fighters received allowances, but he did not provide evidence for that figure.
He urged the government to document the history of the Liberation War and give recognition to the families of those killed.
The remarks were made at the unveiling of a book on the background to the independence struggle and the 2024 July uprising.
Rahman alleged that political pledges voiced before the 2024 uprising had changed afterwards and that alternative narratives were being promoted.
He said the government must implement what he described as the public's verdict in a referendum.
Rahman alleged that proceedings over killings and attacks linked to the July uprising had lost momentum under the current government.
He warned against action against people he described as July uprising fighters and said Jamaat-e-Islami was willing to pursue unity on issues of national interest without surrendering public rights.
