At least 10 people were injured in a clash between rival groups of Gono the available report Parishad over a newly formed union committee in Rangopaldi Union of Dasmina upazila, Patuakhali.

The confrontation took place at the union's temporary office on Monday, following the announcement of a partial committee.

The Dasmina upazila president and general secretary had approved the one-year partial committee on July 31.

Disagreement over posts in the new committee emerged after it was announced.

The clash followed an argument and scuffle when supporters of the new committee went to the office and encountered supporters of Musa Majhi, a former union convener and current vice-president.

Four seriously injured people were referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, while others received treatment at Dasmina উপজেলা Health Complex and local health facilities.

New committee president Maidal Islam was among those referred for further treatment.

Maidal Islam and general secretary Mamun Talukdar alleged that Majhi and his supporters blocked their entry and attacked them with local weapons.

Majhi denied the allegation and said Maidal and Mamun led a group of 50 to 60 people that attacked his side while they were holding discussions at the office.

Majhi also alleged that the upazila leadership had approved the new committee through a financial transaction; the allegation was not independently verified.

Upazila president Altaf Hossain Akon and general secretary Liar Hossain Hawladar said they would examine the cause of the clash and take organisational action if a breach of discipline is established.

Dasmina police officer-in-charge Atikul Islam said police responded after being informed and that the local law-and-order situation was normal.

Atikul Islam said no written complaint had been received at that point, and police would investigate and take legal action if one is filed.
