The Appellate Division has begun hearing appeals in the murder case of former Gazipur member of parliament Ahsanullah Master.
The hearing began on 2 August before a four-judge bench led by the chief justice.
Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque is representing the state at the hearing.
Ahsanullah Master was killed by gunfire at a gathering at Noagaon MA Majid Mia High School মাঠ in Tongi, Gazipur, on 7 May 2004.
His brother, Matiur Rahman, filed the case with Tongi police, naming 17 people as accused.
On 16 April 2005, the Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced 22 defendants to death and six to life imprisonment.
Two people initially sentenced to death later died.
The High Court delivered its judgment on 15 June 2016 after considering the death references, jail appeals and appeals lodged by defendants.
It upheld death sentences for six defendants, reduced seven death sentences to life imprisonment and acquitted 11 defendants.
The High Court also upheld life sentences for two defendants and acquitted four others who had received life terms at trial.
Ahsanullah Master, a freedom fighter, teacher and labour leader, was elected from the Gazipur-2 constituency in 1996 and 2001.
