The High Court has granted bail to television actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, in a case alleging that he abetted the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnath Khan Ikra.
The order was issued by a bench of Justice K M Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher.
Alvi sought High Court bail after an unsuccessful application before a lower court, and the bench made its rule on the bail question absolute following a hearing.
He surrendered before a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate on 18 June, when his bail request was rejected and he was ordered to jail.
The investigating officer applied for seven days of remand on 21 June, and a magistrate granted two days of remand on 24 June.
Ikra was found at her home in Mirpur DOHS on 28 February and was declared dead after being taken to Kurmitola General Hospital.
Her father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed the case with Mirpur Model Police Station that night.
In the complaint, Khan alleged that prolonged family conflict and various forms of abuse had compelled his daughter to take her own life.
The case record cited in court states that Alvi was in Nepal when Ikra was found.
Alvi and Ikra married in 2010 and have a son.
Alvi's mother, Nasrin Sultana Shyuli, received bail after surrendering in the same case on 4 June.
