A man died after being beaten by local residents in Ishwardi, Pabna, following an allegation of attempted theft.
The dead man was identified as Manik Hossain, also known as Suman.
The incident occurred around midnight on August 2 in Mistripara Thandatala village of Sahapur union.
Shopkeeper Habibul Mondal said he heard sounds near his grocery shop, which is beside his home, and went outside to stop Suman.
Habibul and local residents alleged that Suman had entered the shop intending to steal.
They alleged that he then attacked Habibul with a sharp weapon and injured two of Habibul's sons when they intervened.
The injured sons were identified as Shakil and Shahab, and all three injured people were taken to hospital.
Local residents subsequently detained Suman and beat him, after which he died at the scene.
Ishwardi police officer-in-charge Asadur Rahman said police recovered the body and sent it to Pabna General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
Asadur Rahman said legal action would be taken after the investigation.
The theft allegation and the account of the alleged weapon attack remain allegations, and no finding on criminal responsibility was stated.
