A Dhaka court sent former joint secretary Syed Jaglul Pasha to jail after police produced him in a case over the alleged obstruction of former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s travel to a rally.
The investigating officer sought permission to question Pasha in custody for 10 days.
Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin ordered Pasha held in jail pending a hearing on the remand application.
The date of that hearing is disputed: one account places it on Thursday and another on Sunday.
Detective Branch police arrested Pasha at his residence in Basundhara at about 1:30am on Tuesday.
Shariful Islam Shawon, a former joint secretary of Rajshahi University’s Latif Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, filed the case at Gulshan police station in October 2024, naming 111 accused persons.
The complaint alleges that Pasha and others gathered outside Zia’s Gulshan residence on December 28, 2013, armed with weapons, assaulted BNP activists and blocked the road.
It further alleges that trucks, including sand-laden vehicles, were used as barricades when Zia prepared to leave for a rally the following morning.
The complaint also alleges that pepper spray was used and that Zia and accompanying political activists were injured.
The case cites multiple Penal Code provisions as well as Section 15(1)(b) of the Special Powers Act, 1974.
