Border Guard Bangladesh personnel detained Md Faruk, 30, on the Jessore-Benapole highway in the early hours of 5 August 2026 following a tip-off.
BGB battalion commander Lt Col Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan said five gold bars weighing 529.64 grams, two mobile phones and 1,655 taka in cash were recovered from Faruk, with the gold valued at about 1.10 crore taka.
Khan said Faruk told initial questioning that he was carrying the bars for smuggling to India via Benapole, and that a case was filed and Faruk was handed over to Jessore Kotwali police station.
Separately later on 5 August, customs intelligence officers at the Benapole immigration checkpoint detained Mubarak Hossain, a Bangladeshi passport holder from Munshiganj Sadar.
Customs intelligence assistant commissioner Sajid Mahadud Kaushik said Mubarak was questioned after his behaviour appeared suspicious and admitted to having gold; two 100-gram bars with an estimated market value of about 22 lakh taka were recovered from his trouser pocket.
Kaushik said an X-ray examination was done to check whether more gold was concealed in the detainee's body and that authorities were preparing to file a case under the gold-smuggling law.
