Russian missile and drone attacks struck Kyiv and nearby areas overnight into Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said.
The officials reported at least 17 deaths and more than 40 injuries.
Kyiv military administration head Tymur Tkachenko described the attack as a large-scale strike on the Kyiv region.
Air-raid alerts lasted for more than an hour as ballistic missiles hit Kyiv and its outskirts, he said.
Ukraine's air force said it shot down about 90% of 115 drones launched by Russia.
It said it did not intercept any of 24 ballistic missiles or four Zircon cruise missiles.
Residential buildings, warehouses and logistics facilities were damaged or destroyed in the strikes.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said people could be trapped beneath rubble in the city centre and that at least four injured people were in serious condition.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said warehouses, infrastructure, a railway station, a brewery and a construction-materials warehouse were among the sites hit.
Authorities recorded nine deaths in Boryspil district, four in Bucha district and one in Fastiv district; the remaining locations of reported deaths were not specified.
Russia's Defence Ministry said it targeted logistics centres it alleged were connected to dual-use goods and drone components.
Kyiv's military administration accused Russia of intentionally targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, an accusation Moscow denies.
Zelenskyy called on Ukraine's partners to provide additional missile-defence systems and interceptors, arguing that shortages had contributed to the loss of life.
Russia and Ukraine have each denied intentionally attacking civilians during the war that began with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
