US special envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor said American businesspeople are interested in investing in Bangladesh and plan to visit soon to examine opportunities.

He spoke to journalists after meeting Prime Minister Tarek Rahman on 1 August at the prime minister's office in Dhaka.

Gor described the talks as productive, saying the United States gives the prime minister the highest respect.

He said Washington has lowered its travel advisory for Bangladesh to encourage people to come as tourists and investors.

Gor said a delegation of US companies interested in investing in Bangladesh will visit in the coming week.

He cited pharmaceuticals as an example of sectors where the United States and Bangladesh could cooperate.

Earlier during his trip, Gor met Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman and visited Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar before the meeting with the prime minister.
