US President Donald Trump said the United States and Iran would begin a new round of talks on August 3.
Speaking aboard Air Force One on August 2, Trump said the discussions were expected to start in the afternoon.
Trump said he had paused a planned large-scale military operation against Iran.
He said mediators from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar had urged him to pursue an agreement rather than proceed with the operation.
Trump claimed that the parties had reached a basic understanding on the scope of a possible deal.
He also claimed there was an arrangement concerning the Strait of Hormuz and said he expected an agreement on Iran's nuclear programme.
Trump declined to set a deadline for completing any agreement, saying the United States was prepared to act if necessary and that he did not want people killed.
An Iranian semi-official outlet rejected Trump's assertion that Tehran had asked Washington to refrain from further military action.
