Bangladesh has proposed importing natural gas from Myanmar through a pipeline, citing rising domestic demand, during a meeting at the Secretariat on 2 August 2026.
Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud raised the proposal with Myanmar's ambassador to Bangladesh, U Kyaw Soe Mye.
The ambassador responded positively and suggested that liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Bangladesh could also be discussed.
The two sides revisited an earlier proposal for a gas pipeline from Myanmar to Chittagong, which the minister said was first initiated in 2003 by then-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
Mahmud said Prime Minister Tarek Rahman is interested in advancing the initiative and proposed a ministerial-level meeting, inviting Myanmar's energy minister to Bangladesh.
The minister also linked the plan to a proposed China-Myanmar-Bangladesh economic corridor, which he said was raised during Rahman's recent visit to China.
The ambassador suggested reviving the Bangladesh-Myanmar joint technical committee to review the proposed energy cooperation.
Officials present included State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit, Energy Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam and Power Secretary Mirana Mahrukh.
