A 9,200kg, or 9.2-tonne, consignment of green chillies entered Bangladesh from India through Benapole Land Port on 3 August.
The shipment arrived at about 8pm or 9pm, with the precise arrival time differing between the accounts.
After port and customs procedures, the consignment was released that night and sent toward Dhaka.
Shimu Enterprise was identified as the importer, while Shimu Shipping Lines handled clearance-related documentation.
Importer Shahjahan Ali said his total cost was about Tk135 per kilogram and that the chillies would be sold with a small margin.
Ali said increased imports could reduce market prices, but alleged that customs harassment and clearance complications were raising costs and creating losses for importers.
Import documents listed a declared value of Tk23,875 per tonne, or roughly Tk24 per kilogram, and duties of about Tk45 per kilogram.
Those figures imply an import cost of about Tk78 per kilogram before transport, port, clearance and other expenses.
Commerce Ministry information said 69 traders received import permits for a combined 29,710 tonnes of green chillies in the first phase.
The government permitted the imports to address higher prices and supply shortages, with agricultural authorities citing the need to stabilize supply.
Green chillies were selling for Tk300 per kilogram at Benapole’s wholesale market on the morning after the shipment arrived.
Benapole Land Port Director Shamim Hossain said the consignment was cleared quickly and that more chilli trucks were waiting across the border.
