California law enforcement arrested a 38-year-old man near Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes on Sunday afternoon, before President Donald Trump was scheduled to attend a Republican Party fundraising dinner at the club during his California visit.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department identified the man as Jenen John Tayel and said he faces accusations of carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition.
According to the sheriff's department, plainclothes federal agents spotted the man moving around different parts of the golf course, taking photos and video and appearing to watch security-related activity, then alerted local police.
The department said a 16-round magazine was found on him, and a loaded pistol and a magazine loaded with hollow-point bullets were recovered from his car parked at the course.
Police questioning also revealed that the El Segundo Police Department was looking for him in connection with a robbery in El Segundo, roughly 25 kilometers north of Rancho Palos Verdes.
On Monday, the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and the sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau searched his home in Downey and found an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, a large amount of ammunition and notebooks containing concerning comments.
The sheriff's department said no credible threat to communities had been identified, authorities have not said whether the man intended to harm Trump, and the Secret Service is assisting an investigation that could produce further charges.
California, where the arrest took place, bans magazines holding more than 10 rounds, and hollow-point bullets are designed to expand on impact.
