Activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed in Narayanganj on 5 August during events marking July Mass Uprising Day.
The confrontation was linked to a dispute over remarks at a meeting at Government Tolaram College in Chashara.
The additional superintendent of police for Narayanganj district said an argument and physical altercation followed a remark by a Chhatra Shibir president at the gathering.
The violence involved repeated chases and confrontations and spread through the Chashara and College Road areas.
Accounts from the scene described participants using sticks and throwing bricks or brickbats during the clashes.
Leaders and activists of the two organisations said at least seven people from both sides were injured.
The additional superintendent of police said he had heard that three or four people were injured, leaving the total unconfirmed.
Chhatra Dal alleged that Chhatra Shibir used provocative remarks before attacking with outsiders, sharp weapons and sticks.
Chhatra Shibir countered that Chhatra Dal attacked its activists first in Chashara and again on College Road.
Police intervened and dispersed the opposing groups.
Police said additional personnel were deployed after the incident, and the situation was brought under control.
The police official said no one had been detained at the time of his statement.
