Police said they arrested Hannan Mia in an operation in Tarpurchandi union of Chandpur Sadar in the early hours of 3 August.

Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Foyez Ahmed said a team led by sub-inspector Gazi Kamal made the arrest after receiving information.

Hannan is an accused in a case concerning an alleged attack on former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s motorcade in the capital’s Banglamotor area in 2015.

The case was filed on 23 November 2024 by Fazlul Karim and names more than 200 people, including Obaidul Quader.

Hannan is listed as accused number 178 in that case.

The case alleges that Awami League leaders and activists from affiliated organisations attacked the motorcade while Khaleda Zia was travelling for election campaigning.

The officer-in-charge said Hannan was on bail in the motorcade case but was shown arrested in a separate sabotage case.

Police said he was sent to a Chandpur court on the afternoon of 3 August.

The same police account identified Hannan as president of unit 2 of Tejgaon police station Jubo League.

The evidence provided does not state the outcome of the court proceeding or provide Hannan’s response to the allegations or arrest.
