The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said it detained an Indian passenger at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on 1 August.
CIID identified the passenger as Thamim Ansari.
The agency said he arrived from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates on Air Arabia flight G9-526 at 6:58am.
CIID said its Chattogram regional team identified him after he had crossed the airport’s green channel.
During a body search, officers recovered capsule-shaped material allegedly concealed inside his underwear, CIID said.
CIID described the recovered material as gold-related.
Its preliminary gross weight, including packing materials, was 455 grams, the agency said.
CIID estimated the material’s value at about Tk1 crore.
The agency said a goldsmith was assisting with tests to determine the material’s actual gold quantity and purity after removing the packing.
CIID said it was taking action under customs law and that steps to file a criminal case against the passenger were under way.
CIID said it would continue intelligence monitoring and operations aimed at preventing smuggling of gold and other goods through international airports.
