Police said 71-year-old Mahbub Ara Begum was found dead at her home in South Gawair, South Khan, Dhaka.
Her son, Mohammad Mahbub Hasan, filed a murder case with South Khan police station.
Police later arrested Abu Talha from the South Gawair area in connection with the case.
Police prosecution official Abu Bakkar Siddique said Talha was produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat.
The court recorded Talha's confessional statement and ordered him sent to jail, Siddique said.
The complaint filed by Hasan alleges that CCTV footage from the flat showed Talha entering with several unidentified people on Thursday afternoon.
It further alleges that Mahbub Ara Begum was suffocated with a pillow, cloth and later her scarf after she resisted.
The complaint alleges that Talha removed her gold earrings, locked the flat from inside and fled.
Mahbub Ara Begum had lived alone in a second-floor flat of her four-storey home after her husband died about nine months earlier.
Hasan had installed cameras in the home, including the bedroom, because of concerns for his mother's safety.
Police said Talha had regularly visited Mahbub Ara Begum's home.
Hasan said the camera footage enabled a rapid identification of the accused and called for the maximum punishment.
