Mizan Mia died following an incident on Saturday afternoon in Barachapa Purba Para village, Ward No. 4 of Barachapa Union in Monohardi, Narsingdi.
He was vice-president of the Ward No. 4 unit of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal.
Police and relatives said Mizan and his uncle, Shahidullah, had a longstanding dispute over a road beside their homes, with land issues also cited.
They said local mediation sessions had not produced a permanent settlement.
Relatives and police said an argument began over the cutting of a tree beside the road.
They alleged that Mizan was struck on the head with a stick during the confrontation.
One account alleged that Shahidullah's son Jibon Mia delivered the blow, while another alleged that both Shahidullah and Jibon Mia attacked Mizan.
Mizan was taken to Monohardi Upazila Health Complex, where he was declared dead.
Resident Medical Officer Khondkar Anisur Rahman said Mizan had been brought to the hospital dead.
He said the precise cause of death could be determined after the post-mortem report is received.
Monohardi police said the body was sent to the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Police said legal action was being pursued and the investigation into the circumstances was continuing.
