Bangladesh has hired a law firm in Dubai to seek cancellation of former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed’s reported bail, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said.
He made the remarks on August 2 after a meeting with police personnel in Rajshahi.
The minister said he had been told that a Dubai court granted Ahmed conditional bail.
He said the reported condition was that Ahmed could not leave the United Arab Emirates.
Salahuddin Ahmed said he had asked for a certified copy of the court order because he did not know all of its terms.
He said the law firm had been instructed to pursue the bail cancellation and that Bangladesh hoped to bring Ahmed back quickly through legal means.
The minister said the home secretary had spoken with Bangladesh’s ambassador in Dubai after he learned of the reported bail.
On June 14, police headquarters spokesperson AIG Shahadat Hossain said Ahmed had been arrested in Dubai with Interpol assistance in connection with a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Ahmed served as Bangladesh’s inspector general of police from April 2020 to September 2022.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed four cases in December 2024 alleging that Ahmed, his wife and their two daughters acquired illicit assets and concealed asset information.
A court ordered action through Interpol against Ahmed on February 10, 2025.
The evidence does not include the Dubai court’s certified bail order or establish whether the government’s challenge has been filed or decided.
