The Police Bureau of Investigation has submitted a charge sheet naming 50 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in the case over the death of Rakibul Hossain during protests in Mirpur-10.
PBI inspector Md Mominul Islam said he filed the charge sheet with the court on 13 July.
He said the investigation recommended discharge for 49 others because the allegations against them could not be substantiated.
The investigator said some of those recommended for discharge were not in Mirpur at the time, while others may have been named in the initial complaint with improper intent.
The original case named 98 people and about 100 unidentified suspects.
Other people named in the charge sheet include Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman.
The charge sheet alleges that Hasina and other accused held meetings and issued instructions intended to suppress the student-led movement.
It further alleges that political leaders and police officers made inciting statements and sought to halt the movement through violence.
The case narrative says Rakibul, 29, joined a protest on 17 July 2024 and was struck in the neck by a bullet after gunfire began near the Mirpur-10 roundabout.
It says a doctor at Dr Ajmal Hospital declared him dead at 9:15pm.
The investigator said a court-authorised effort to exhume the body for a post-mortem could not proceed after objections from family members and local residents.
Rakibul's father, Md Abu Bakkar Siddique, said he had not been informed of the charge sheet and called for a proper investigation and justice.
