The Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association issued gold-price information stated to apply in jewellery shops on 6 August.

The price information contains conflicting 22-carat rates, so a single verified retail price cannot be established from the evidence.

One schedule lists 22-carat gold at Tk223,074 per bhori, with one bhori defined as 11.664 grams.

Another schedule lists 22-carat hallmark jewellery gold at Tk19,970 per gram and about Tk232,960 per bhori.

That first schedule puts 21-carat gold at Tk213,043 per bhori, 18-carat at Tk182,950 and traditional-method gold at Tk149,474.

The second schedule gives 21-carat gold at Tk19,075 per gram, 18-carat at Tk16,380 and traditional-method gold at Tk13,380.

The association said VAT is included in the stated sale prices and may not be charged separately to customers.

Making charges can still be added depending on the jewellery design, the association said.

The association also listed silver prices of Tk420 per gram for 22-carat, Tk400 for 21-carat, Tk345 for 18-carat and Tk260 for traditional-method silver.

It said its existing rules on exchanges and buy-backs would remain in force after deductions for applicable VAT, making charges and stone values.

The evidence gives different accounts of the timing of the price-setting decision, adding to uncertainty over which quoted gold schedule applied on 6 August.
