Police have detained a man after allegations that his former wife died following a fire attack in Biral upazila of Dinajpur.

The deceased was identified as 25-year-old Sumaiya Akter Shyamoli, a resident of Bijora Sutarpara village in Bijora Union.

Police identified the detainee as Mahbubur Rahman, 51, her former husband.

Police and family accounts said the couple had divorced about two months earlier.

Investigators said Rahman forcibly entered Shyamoli’s parental home and allegedly set her on fire using petrol.

The stated time of the incident differs: one account places it at about 10:30pm on August 1, while another places it around midnight.

Shyamoli’s grandmother alleged that there was first an attempt to attack her with a knife; that allegation was not independently established.

She was taken to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital and was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

She died while being taken to Rangpur, police said.

Biral police said Rahman was detained on the night of the incident and the body was sent to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police said legal proceedings were under way; no court finding on the allegations is reflected in the evidence.
