Mexican authorities said TikTok creator César Gastelum was shot dead during a livestream in Culiacán, the capital of northwestern Sinaloa state.
Authorities said the attack occurred on Tuesday night.
Mexico’s Security Cabinet and local prosecutors said the case remains under investigation.
They said investigators were considering a possible connection to cartel-related violence, but did not identify any criminal group.
The authorities also said they were examining whether Gastelum had posted videos referring to part of a criminal group.
No motive, suspect, or group responsible had been publicly identified in the information released by the authorities.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said those responsible must be arrested and that the reason for the killing must be determined.
Gastelum had more than 650,000 followers on TikTok and also had a substantial following on other social media platforms.
He regularly posted comedy videos and content set to regional Mexican music.
People placed candles at the location where he was killed.
In May 2025, beauty influencer Valeria Márquez, 23, was shot dead while livestreaming from a salon in Jalisco state.
