Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group fired multiple ballistic missiles at the Saudi oil tanker Wafa in the northern Red Sea near Yanbu.
Saree claimed the missiles hit the vessel accurately.
He described the operation as part of a Houthi maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia and a strategy the group calls “blockade for blockade.”
Saree said at least eight tankers had been targeted since the blockade began.
He also claimed that 29 Saudi oil tankers had been prevented from transiting the Red Sea and Arabian Sea or had been forced to turn back.
Saree said the group was enforcing its blockade at the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and that Saudi Arabia had redirected oil tankers toward the northern Red Sea.
The Houthi group announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia on July 20.
Saree referred to tanker targets since July 22, leaving the stated start date of the blockade unclear.
Saudi authorities and an independent international body had not formally confirmed the alleged strike at the time described.
The number of tankers allegedly hit is also unclear: Saree named Wafa, while another account described two Saudi tankers without identifying them.
The London marine insurance market expanded its Red Sea high-risk area to include waters near additional Saudi ports after recent attacks on Saudi-linked vessels.
The Bab al-Mandeb Strait links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a major route for international trade and energy shipping.
