FIFA is examining alleged disciplinary-code breaches after a confrontation following Argentina’s World Cup final against Spain on 19 July.
The final was held at New Jersey Stadium.
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes, teammates Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada, and assistant coach Roberto Ayala were identified as being involved in the post-match incident.
Accounts citing television footage allege that Paredes confronted Spain players Eric Garcia and Gavi, but they differ on the precise physical actions alleged.
An initial claim that referee Slavko Vincic showed Paredes a direct red card was later contradicted by accounts stating that no immediate disciplinary action was taken.
Under the disciplinary provision cited in the accounts, each finding of aggressive conduct could carry a minimum three-match suspension.
A nine-match ban is therefore a possible outcome only if three allegations are upheld.
One account says rules on broader football bans could be relevant, while suggesting such a measure may not be applied in this case.
FIFA’s disciplinary committee is expected to determine whether any sanction will be imposed and, if so, its scope.
Paredes said after the match that his international future required discussion and that a decision should not be rushed.
