International crude oil prices rose after sharp declines in the preceding trading session.
Brent crude gained 62 cents, or 0.7%, to $84.39 a barrel.
US West Texas Intermediate crude rose 61 cents, or 0.7%, to $80.95 a barrel.
Brent had dropped 7% in the prior session, reaching its lowest level in three weeks.
WTI had fallen by more than 5% in the previous session to about a one-week low.
The price move came amid renewed tensions between the United States and Iran and uncertainty over the prospects for a diplomatic resolution.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington was speaking with Iran.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on the same day that no talks with Washington were currently under way.
Trump said he had decided to continue seeking talks following requests from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and other countries.
The conflicting statements leave the status of any US-Iran contacts unresolved.
